In a dominant performance at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday 18th May 2024, Nigeria’s U17 women’s team, the Flamingos, triumphed over Burkina Faso with a 6-0 victory, securing their place in the final round of the African qualification series for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Harmony Chidi, a standout player throughout the qualifiers, scored a hat-trick, adding to her impressive tally.

She opened the scoring in the 11th minute, exploiting a defensive error to dribble past the Burkinabe goalkeeper.

Despite a few near misses, including an angled shot by Shakirat Moshood hitting the post and a tame finish by Peace Effiong, the Flamingos maintained pressure.

Effiong redeemed herself in the 34th minute, making it 2-0 after a powerful run. In the second half, Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper Baguian made notable saves but couldn’t stem the Nigerian onslaught.

Chidi’s second goal came in the 74th minute after a rebound from Taiwo Afolabi’s shot, and substitute Ramota Kareem added a fourth goal in the 84th minute.

Chidi completed her hat-trick with a dipping shot in the 85th minute, and Effiong secured her brace in the 88th minute after a slick team move.

With this comprehensive win, Nigeria advances with a 7-1 aggregate to face the winner of the Senegal/Liberia fixture in the final qualifying round, starting on June 8th.
