Dayo Tukuru, the coordinator of the FIT MUM foundation has been making a significant impact on the lives of women in the Mushin community.
The FIT MUM programme, initiated in 2018, brings women together every Saturday to keep fit and embrace a healthy lifestyle.
The programme has flourished over the past four years, providing a supportive and inclusive space for women from diverse backgrounds.
Speaking about the programme’s inception, Dayo shares, “We started on the streets, but as our numbers grew, we had to move to the Eko boys’ field. It’s been an exciting yet demanding journey, thinking for a lot of women and catering to their needs. I am proud to have united women from different tribes and religions, fostering a sense of community.”
Dayo’s determination to lead and inspire shines through as she recounts the challenges faced during the initial stages of FIT MUM. Despite starting with only a few members, her unwavering dedication and encouragement attracted more participants, turning FIT MUM into a vibrant community of over a hundred women.
The FIT MUM members actively participate in the LAGOSWOMENRUN programme every year, exhibiting their passion for fitness and camaraderie. Looking ahead, FIT MUM is organizing an inter-group house sports event, scheduled for August 5th.
The event aims to celebrate motherhood, with women of all ages participating in various races and fun activities. Dayo is eager to see personalities from Lagos State and different parastatals in attendance, making it a special and unforgettable occasion.
As Dayo envisions the future of FIT MUM, she dreams of establishing a hub or field that offers more than just exercise opportunities. She envisions evening schools, skill acquisition departments, and a gym for women who cannot afford regular gym charges. Her determination to make this vision a reality is unwavering, and she eagerly awaits the day she can proudly see “FIT MUM HUB” displayed boldly.
Dayo, an interior decorator and carpenter, is married to a reverend doctor and is a mother of two. Her passion for empowering others and contributing to society is evident in her dedication to FIT MUM and grassroots development. While acknowledging the challenges that come with grassroots work, she encourages others to persevere and stay committed to making a difference in their communities.
With her favourite saying, “If it has to be, it is up to me,” Dayo embodies a spirit of determination and positivity. With her strong spirit and the support of her FIT MUM community, Dayo continues to inspire and empower women to lead active and fulfilling lives. Her belief in the power of community and fitness to transform lives continues to drive FIT MUM’s success.
