At 53, George, a former assistant to Peseiro, has been handed the reins of the Super Eagles. Awoniyi, in an exclusive interview with renowned journalist Tobi Adepoju, stated that George possesses the right character and quality to steer the team towards success.
“Being the assistant, with what he has achieved for the country and the humility he has shown to the players; like I always say, everyone deserves a great opportunity,” said Taiwo Awoniyi, a former Union Berlin striker. He further added, “We have a lot of players and a good coach as well, it’s just to get it right on the field.”
Taiwo Awoniyi himself is expected to be a part of the Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team is set to face South Africa and Benin on June 7 and June 10 respectively.
