FG Earmarks N4.3 Billion for NUGA Games, Principal’s Cup Revitalization

The Federal Government, led by President Tinubu, has allocated N4.3 billion to rejuvenate the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), the Principal’s Cup, and other school sports initiatives.

This funding, included in the 2025 budget, aims to enhance grassroots sports development, foster talent discovery, and position Nigeria among the world’s top sporting nations.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) highlighted the critical role of school sports in identifying young talents, referencing the 38% contribution of student-athletes to medals at the 2023 Paris Olympics.

The investment will support sustainable sports programs across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, marking a legacy under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Since its first event at the University of Ibadan in 1966, NUGA has been instrumental in grooming athletes like Vincent Enyeama, Seyi Olofinjana, and Olusoji Fasuba, who have represented Nigeria on the global stage.

With a history of producing professional athletes and affiliations with international sports organizations, the revitalized NUGA and Principal’s Cup promise to bolster Nigeria’s sporting excellence.
