Female Wrestlers Begin Hunt For Glory In Budapest

Four Nigerian female wrestlers will this week begin their hunt for glory at the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary, sports247.ng can report.

The president of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Honourable Daniel Igali, who is also in Budapest for the United World Wrestling congress, said the quartet of Odunayo Adekuoroye, Blessing Onyebuchi, Blessing Oborududu and Aminat Adeniyi are representing the country at the global competition, but there is no male wrestler in the team.

He revealed further that Adeukuoroye will compete in the 57kg, Onyebuchi will do battle in the 76kg, Oborududu, will compete in the 68kg and Adeniyi seeks honours in the 63kg.

Oborududu and Onyebuchi 76kg will compete on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Adekuoroye and Adeniyi will compete on Thursday and Friday.

Igali said Nigeria hopes to do better this year, after winning won a silver and bronze at the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France; especially as the 2018 edition is the first to use a ranking system to determine seeds.

He said: “The four wrestlers have been training in Yenagoa for the past five weeks. We would have loved to attend with more than these four but it is better than not featuring at all.

“The wrestlers who will compete first have left Nigeria on Saturday while the others will leave on Sunday. We are hopeful of a good outing – better than the one we had in France last year.”
