Weder Bremen of Germany defender, Felix Agu has admitted he would prefer playing for the country of his birth instead of seeking a switch of international allegiance and invitation to the Super Eagles, Sports247 reports.
Having already starred for Germany’s under-21 national team and now a regular with Bremen in Der Bundesliga, Agu believes switching allegiance to feature for Nigeria would not be comfortable for him, and it would be like starting his international carer all over again.
The 25-year-old left wing back, who began his football career as a kid at his home town club, Osnabrucker SC, before getting a feel of professional matches in the third-tier league with VfL Osnabruck from 2010 to 2018, further opined that he would feel like fish out of water with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The in-form lad, who has scored three goals this season for Bremen, recalled having received an invitation some years back to line out with Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles, but he opted to commit himself to Germany’s under-21 squad back then because he felt at home in the midst of other youngsters from his country of birth.
Felix Agu pointed out, “Sticking with Germany’s under-21s was kind of a decision based on inexperience. It came at a time when I was still at Onasbruck, and I had never switched any club. I didn’t know how to come into a new team, and being with the under-21s was like comfort for me.”
With a fresh offer now coming his way to switch allegiance and play for Nigeria at senior level, Agu weighed his prospects in the Super Eagles and concluded with a down-to-earth verdict that he would pick Germany if given calls by both countries.
“If I moved to the Nigerian national team, it would be an uncertain step and a new start. I am kind of like a shy guy and not really comfortable with a new environment. I will always prefer anywhere I can play safe.
“The under-21s was what I already knew and I felt better there … but now it has kind of changed a little bit. All the same, Nigeria will not come now and I would not consider the German coach if he also comes for me to see if I could fit into the roster,” Agu acceded.
