The launch took place during the closing ceremony of the Canoeing Championship at the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival, held in Uyo from April 2nd to 9th, 2025.
With global interest in both recreational and competitive water sports steadily growing, the newly launched club is expected to become a regional hub for nurturing talent and developing similar clubs across Akwa Ibom State. Emphasizing the benefits of rowing, canoeing, and sailing—including physical fitness, teamwork, and environmental appreciation—the club aims to provide a structured platform for harnessing these skills while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the area.
The launch ceremony was presided over by Federation President Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni (Rtd), with key officials in attendance including Secretary General Olubunmi Ola Oluode, Technical Director Mr. Ebenezer Ayomide Bello—Africa’s number one, world number eight, and a two-time Olympian—and Mr. King Okon, sports consultant and promoter of the club.
Representing the local administration, Comrade Liberty Usanga, on behalf of the Uruan LGA Chairman, welcomed dignitaries and guests. Also present were Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports for Bayelsa State; Mr. Gabriel Opuona, Head of Delegation for Rivers State and President of the Sports Coaches Association of Nigeria (SCAN); as well as Obong Ntiense Williams (Mr. Rugby), representing SCAN alongside Opuona.
Notable attendees also included Arc. Mrs. Dorothy Ekanem, the first female architect in Akwa Ibom State, and Mrs. Eme Essien, both lending their support to this landmark event.
In a show of solidarity and forward-looking commitment, SCAN President Mr. Gabriel Opuona praised the initiative and pledged to make the IBOM Club the first beneficiary of a nationwide Coaching Training Program for Rowing, Canoeing, and Sailing in Nigeria.
Bayelsa Clinches Victory in Rowing, Canoeing & Sailing
As the competition wrapped up, Bayelsa State emerged overall winners in the Rowing, Canoeing & Sailing events, claiming 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals. Rivers State followed in second with 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze, while Abia took third place with 2 Silver and 1 Bronze. Edo State finished fourth with 3 Bronze medals, and Delta State came fifth with 1 Bronze.
Unfortunately, host state Akwa Ibom, alongside Cross River, Imo, and Ondo, did not secure any medals in these events.
The launch of the IBOM Club marks a significant leap forward for water sports in the region and sets a new standard for community development, youth engagement, and sporting excellence in the Niger Delta.
