FCT Sports Department and SWAN Strengthen Collaboration for Sports Development

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department and the FCT chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a stronger partnership in advancing sports development within the nation’s capital.

During a strategic meeting held at the FCT Sports Department office in Area 3, Abuja, on Monday, February 24, 2025, FCT Director of Sports Luka Istifanus and FCT SWAN Chairman Kelechi Onwudiwe underscored the significance of collaboration in enhancing sports coverage and driving growth across various sporting disciplines.

Expressing his delight over the unification of FCT SWAN after years of internal divisions, Istifanus emphasized that a united sports media body would play a more effective role in promoting sports.

“I am particularly pleased to see FCT SWAN now fully united after years of division. A cohesive and strong SWAN is essential for sports development in the FCT, and we are eager to work closely with its leadership to achieve our shared objectives,” he stated.

He further assured that the Sports Department would continue to collaborate with SWAN to ensure comprehensive coverage of its activities.

“We have made significant progress in our discussions, and now, it’s time to build on that understanding. A strong relationship with SWAN is key to ensuring that our programs, athletes, and sporting initiatives receive the recognition and support they deserve,” Istifanus added.

He also confirmed that FCT SWAN would have quality representation at various departmental activities, including the Ogun State 2024 National Sports Festival, highlighting the crucial role of professional media coverage in boosting the territory’s sporting engagements.

Additionally, Istifanus revealed that at least 92 athletes would represent the FCT in Jos for the National Sports Festival zonal qualifiers, expressing confidence in their preparations and chances of qualifying for the finals.

In his remarks, Onwudiwe extended his best wishes to the athletes and officials, reaffirming SWAN’s commitment to supporting the Sports Department in advancing sports development.

“We stand firmly behind the FCT contingent as they compete in Jos and wish them success. Beyond that, SWAN remains dedicated to working with the Sports Department to drive policies and initiatives that will elevate sports in the FCT,” the veteran broadcaster stated.

Representing the FCT Sports Department at the meeting were Deputy Director Medical Dr. Charles Agadu, Deputy Director Sports Development Mr. Iyiola Ogundele, Sports Technical Dr. Esther Whoba, Head of Racket Games Mr. Jones Owoida Adakole, Assistant Director Information Mrs. Vivian Onubogu, and Head of Admin Mr. Mohammed O. Abdullah.

The FCT SWAN delegation included Vice Chairman Victor Okoye, Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, Financial Secretary Niyi Busari, and Welfare Officer Joan Iwuchukwu
