Former Flying Eagles and Dream Team coach Fatai Amoo has thrown his support behind Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen, stating that the coach deserves some credit despite the team’s current struggles. In an interview, Amoo explained:
“Our expectations are high, truly, and we judge this team based on past achievements. But do you think even Pep Guardiola would pick these players we have now?” he asked rhetorically, emphasizing the challenges Eguavoen faces.
Amoo highlighted the potential of players like Chidera Ejuke, saying, “We have Ejuke, who has shown fantastic talent, and I believe he deserves more time.”
He stressed the importance of patience with such players but also acknowledged that “there are also players out here in the league who can deliver what we lack.”
The veteran coach also pointed out a key issue with the current team, adding, “So far, it looks like we’ve got some stability in the defense and there’s a lot of quality in the attack, but the midfield still is a concern.”
He noted the team’s lack of creativity, stating, “We lack that creativity, and it’s why people still ask for a player like Okocha till date. However, I think if we look inwards, we will find the answers.”
Amoo believes that a deeper focus on the Nigerian league could provide solutions to the Super Eagles’ midfield problems, encouraging a fresh look at homegrown talent.
