FC Cincinnati of USA striker, Fanendo Adi opted to stay humble and modest in victory against his former club this past weekend, as his new team beat Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer (MLS).
It was Cincinnati’s first win in MLS, but sports247.ng can report that Adi felt some nostalgia for his former club, especially as Portland had a player sent off and were reduced to 10 men in their 3-0 defeat.
Adi, though, could not get among the goal getters, as Kendall Waston scored FC Cincy’s first home goal in the MLS in the 15th minute by heading home Leonardo Bertone’s free kick.
Soon after, Allan Cruz scored a cheeky back-heel just after the hour to add a second and two minutes later, Mathieu Deplagneon finished off for a third.
Adi’s side’s goalkeeper, Spencer Richey then denied a point-blank effort by Dairon Asprilla at the back post from a corner kick, before Portland defender, Larrys Mabiala got a second yellow card with 20 minutes left.
Adi stated afterward that he had to stay humble because he played against a team that gave him a lift when he needed it.
The former Super Eagles invitee also acknowledged that he could not score, despite getting a starting role for the game, and was replaced as early as the 46th minute by Darren Mattocks.
“It’s a good start to the team, but I am disappointed not to score. All the same, it does not matter much, because Portland is a team I still owe a lot for what they gave me when I was with them,” Adi submitted.
