Falcons To Commence Training For Cyprus Cup

Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons will hardly have any time off on their return from a four-nation competition in China, as the squad is set to quickly commence preparations for a similar outing in Cyprus.

Sports247.ng gathered that the Falcons will return home from China on Wednesday, then immediately return to camp to start preparations for the 2019 Cyprus Women’s Cup, billed for 25th February to 7th March.

Thomas Dennerby and his wards will seek a better outing in Cyprus, after finishing third at the Wuhan Invitational Women’s Competition in China last weekend.

Both competitions are part of their preparations for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in France, and Dennerby will aim to get some morale boosting results and a sound footing heading to the Mundial.

The Falcons recovered from a 3-0 loss to hosts, China to thrash Romania 4-1 in Sunday’s third place match at Huitang Stadium in Meizhou.

Alternate skipper, Rita Chikwelu got a brace, as defender Onome Ebi and forward Ini-Abasi Umotong weighed in with a goal each for a rout.

The Falcons exploded into form after the Romanians had threatened to assert some power by cancelling out Chikwelu’s 44th minute opener.

Nearly 8,000 fans watched the encounter, which came hours before host China overpowered Korea Republic in the final to win the trophy in front of 17,999 spectators.
