Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, the Falconets, will sharpen their skills against Australia and Mexico in preparation for the upcoming FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, set to begin in Colombia on August 31.
The Nigerian Football Federation announced that Christopher Danjuma’s squad will face Australia on Friday, August 23, followed by a match against Mexico three days later.
The Falconets received a warm welcome in Bogotá, Colombia, on Sunday evening, greeted by traditional dancers, flag-waving fans, and members of the Local Organizing Committee.
The team arrived at El Dorado International Airport after a 13-hour flight from Istanbul.
Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma expressed the team’s determination to make a strong bid for the trophy, recalling Nigeria’s previous close finishes, including two runner-up spots in 2010 and 2014.
“We have the mandate and support of the government and people of Nigeria to give it our best fight-and-push,” Danjuma said.
The Falconets have a rich history in the tournament, being one of only four countries to have participated in every edition since its inception in 2002.
They are placed in Group D, alongside Germany, the Korean Republic, and Venezuela.
The 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will run from August 31 to September 22, with the Falconets aiming to go all the way this time.
