Former Super Eagles defender, Emeka Ezeugo has joined agitations for the release of a 15-year-old captive of terrorist group, Boko Haram, and sports247.ng learnt that the ex-soccer star is even ready to give himself up in her place.
Ezeugo, who made his mark playing in India before he was spotted for the Eagles in the early 90s, said it is worrisome that Leah Sharibu is being held captive since February because of her refusal to renounce Christianity.
Sharibu was one of the 110 female students of Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State kidnapped by Boko Haram early this year and, in spite of declarations by the federal government that she would be released soon, no respite has been found to her plight.
After observing the prolonged saga, Ezeugo (fondly called Destroyer during his heyday) has put his voice to the clamour for her release, and enjoined other soccer stars to follow suit.
Ezeugo stated on social media: “Leah must be released immediately from protracted predators’ solitary confinement. She is a minor.
“Her freedom must not be leveraged on by the ruling party or the opposition. What can we do to liberate Leah from Boko Haram? She has great shepherds in all of us.
“I have personally offered to be taken hostage in exchange for Leah’s immediate release. There must be something we can do collectively. We surely have not done enough.
“Prominent former footballers, legends of the game, I am appealing to you all to intercede, Boko Haram militants love football and enjoy watching us when we were still active.
“(Let’s) appeal to them publicly, you will be surprised how the Mighty One upstairs will touch their hearts. Your Grace may be responsible for freeing Leah.”
