A veteran coach in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Ogunbote on Wednesday unleashed a bolt of controversy, as he declared that he is yet to reach an agreement with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan on extending his contract.
This comes barely a week after widespread reports indicated that the well-travelled tactician had inked a new deal with The Oluyole Warlords, which he led to a fourth-place finish last season in the NPFL.
However, at a point when fans of the Ibadan giants were already looking up to seeing ‘The Oracle’ bark instructions from 3SC’s bench to their players in the new season, he has sensationally taken a volte-face.
Dramatically, in what might be a smart ploy to keep his options open till the last moment and jump ship with the highest bidder, Ogunbote said he wants to relax for now, then return to the discussion table after a week.
Ogunbote disclosed, “Discussion is still on between the management of Shooting Stars and myself.
I had to tell them that I need to go home, at least to relax, and, next week, I will return … for us to conclude.
“(Then we will know) either it’s going to be Shooting or any other club.” He concluded.
