In a significant development for Lagos sports infrastructure, the long-abandoned Agege Stadium has been handed over to a new contractor, signaling a fresh start for the much-anticipated renovation project, Sports247 can exclusively report.

According to reliable sources, the newly engaged contractor is expected to mobilize to the site immediately, with a scheduled project completion date set for September 2025.

“I can confirm to you that the project has been contracted to a new contractor and mobilized. Construction works are expected to resume immediately at the stadium and be completed on or before September 2025,” a source close to the development revealed, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The source also provided updates on the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, which has faced similar delays as Agege Stadium.

“The pitch has been contracted out, with plans to install a natural grass surface,” he stated.

“Other facilities in the stadium are also expected to undergo upgrades to meet international standards in compliance with CAF and FIFA requirements. The work is expected to be delivered before the end of the year,” he added.

In related developments, Sports247 can confirm that construction is still ongoing at Ifako Stadium and Igbogbo Stadium in Ikorodu.

The inclusion of indoor hall facilities in the stadium designs has contributed to delays in the commissioning initially scheduled for January. While the main football pitches at both locations are already fully prepared and ready for use, the final handover is pending completion of the indoor facilities.

Igbogbo Stadium is expected to host several matches of the 2025 Nationwide League One (NLO), Lagos Center One, which is set to kick off on April 26, 2025, according to fixtures and venue information released by the NLO.

Lagos has experienced a noticeable shortage of functional stadiums over the past two years due to the renovations at Agege and Teslim Balogun Stadiums.

In the interim, grassroots teams and league clubs have had to rely heavily on the Mobolaji Johnson Arena and Legacy Pitch in Surulere for matches and training activities.
