Buzz and excitement have been reignited in the Ekiti state football ecosystem following the announcement of the 3rd edition of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup, an U-15 football competition contested by young boys and girls to harness the immense talent base in the state.
The competition makes a timely return to deepen grassroots football development, building on a rich history of producing exceptional players such as Nigeria U-17 star Muiz Oladimeji, as well as Uche Chinonso, Olatunji Olamilekan, Abass Olasunkanmi and Marvellous Jegede who have made progress in their football careers.
According to the montage shared on social media, the competition intends to maintain its legacy of identifying talents across the state, boosting football development, and involving important stakeholders such as sponsors, the government, the Nigeria Football Federation, the media, and organisers.
In their reactions to the development, supporters of grassroots football development throughout Ekiti expressed their excitement and sincere gratitude to Hon. Akintunde Oyebode, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Finance, who has led his family as sponsors of the competition.
The tournament returns after a year off in 2023, following two successful editions in 2021 and 2022.
On a yearly basis, more than 200 young football authorities and administrators, 5,000 young football talents and 10,000 spectators were actively engaged at match locations and via social media.
This demonstrates the competition’s popularity, acceptability and significance in the region and among the football community.
