History will never forget the effort of the Dream Team at Atlanta ‘96 winning the first-ever footballing gold medal in Africa and Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medal and promises were made to the team from various places which have been partially fulfilled.
On return from the gold-winning competitions, these superheroes were promised rewards such as land and landed property which many were not fulfilled for a very very long time.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently rewarded some of the athletes which included Abiodun Baruwa, Patrice Pascal as well as Chioma Ajunwa to the joy of Lagosians and fellow Atlanta 96’ teammate Ndubisi Idah has praised the sports-loving and promise-keeping Governor as well as requesting that he helps reward him with his promise as well as part of the team.
“I specifically want to thank the present Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for honoring the gift package promised to the 1996 Olympians which included my teammates Baruwa and Pascal. I appreciate the gesture and thank him for all he has done,” Ndubisi told Sports247
“At the same time, I want to remind him that there’s still ME left from that team in that pursuit. I wish to call on him to please help fulfill the promise to me as well so I can also be happy just like my friends are. From the depth of my heart, I’m really grateful that he extended that hand towards my teammates, and I’ll really appreciate if he looks at my plight and does the same for me,” the ex-international added.
The promise was made to these athletes from the state government that period and the sports passionate Governor took it upon himself to fulfill the promise just like his predecessor Babatunde Raji Fashola who rewarded the 1994 team and this has been a welcome development as we pray and hope that the labor of our heroes past will not be in vain.
