Casa Pia and Nigerian winger Saviour Godwin has been crowned the 2021/22 Portuguese Liga Pro Player of the Season. The 25-year-old has been recognized with the award following a remarkable campaign in which he assisted his club in gaining promotion to the Portuguese top flight.
Godwin bagged 10 goals while also providing 3 assists to help Casa Pia to a second place finish. His goals earned his side 15 points. They ended with 68 points after 34 rounds of fixtures, two points behind Rio Ave in first place. The Geese will play in the Primeira Liga in the 2022/23 season for the first time in 83 years.
“True success is not done for individuals, but for the commitment and love for the team. Thank you for the award, and my club Casa Pia for everything,” Godwin said on receiving the award.
Godwin joined Casa Pia in October 2020 and has scored 19 goals in two seasons for the club. Before moving to Portugal, he played for Belgian clubs K.S.V. Roeselare and K.V. Oostende, where he began his professional career.
Godwin was a member of the Nigerian U-17 national team that won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, alongside the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Francis Uzoho. He also represented the Nigeria U-20 team, Flying Eagles at the FIFA U-20 World Cup two years later, scoring two goals in four games as Nigeria was eliminated at the R16.
