Sunday Adetunji’s valiant efforts and his second-half goal for his Macedonian side FC Shkupi was too little, too late as they lost at home 1-2 to Shamrock Rovers, who had won the first leg home tie 3-1 to move to the next stage of the competition on 5-2 aggregate.
Goals by Roffrey Garney and Nigerian-born winger Aidomo Emakhu in the 65th and 84th minutes respectively, for Shamrock Rovers, actually took the winds off the sail of Shkupi, and Adetunji’s 90th-minute goal was scant consolation for his valiant displays on the night.
Before dropping off to the second-tier of European football competition, Sunday Adetunji and his Macedonian champion side had ruffled a few feathers in the preliminary stage of Europe elite competition and with the highly-rated Nigerian attacker catching the eyes of some top European clubs with his eye-catching performances.
