Equatorial Guinea’s coach, Jean Paul has described Nigeria’s 6-0 win against his side on Saturday as a ‘plus’ for the Super Falcons at this year’s Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana.
Jean Paul said he has nothing against the Falcons’ spanking of his side in Cape Coast, but sportas247.ng reports that he expressed a hint that it would have been a different result had his team been well prepared for the competition.
Paul rued the hasty manner in which the two-time champions travelled to Ghana, as he recalled that they were initially thrown out by Confederation of African Football (CAF), which he says, to a large extent, affected his players’ concentration.
Nonetheless, he is not holding anything against the eight-time champions, as he acknowledged that the falcons have top quality players and a strong pedigree in Africa.
The Equatorial Guinea tactician, whose side lost 5-0 to Zambia in their opening match and then 7-1 to South Africa before Saturday’s trouncing by Nigeria, said he can only now look to the future and hope to rebuild the squad for better glory days ahead of them.
Paul retorted: “I respect Nigeria so much because it is a great footballing nation. It is a plus for them to continue in the competition.
“My objective for this team is to secure the future. We’ve seen this team perform compared to the previous team and we know it’s a different one.
“We know Equatorial Guinea to be one of the forces in Africa but now it’s not going as planned. One of the aims for this team is to bring back the glory the team had some time ago.”
