Ella Onojuvwevwo Opens Outdoor Season with Strong 400m Performance at Battle on the Bayou

Nigerian sprinter Ella Onojuvwevwo made an impressive start to her 2024 outdoor season at the Battle on the Bayou in Louisiana, finishing second in the women’s 400m race with a time of 51.01 seconds.

Onojuvwevwo, who has been gaining attention as one of Nigeria’s emerging sprint talents, put up a solid performance in her first quarter-mile race of the season, narrowly missing out on victory to the United States’ Madison Whyte of the University of Southern California (USC), who took the win in 50.91 seconds.

The race came a day after Onojuvwevwo also competed in the 200m, where she clocked a time of 23.25 seconds (+1.8 m/s wind). Her performances in both races signal a promising season ahead as she builds momentum for upcoming international competitions.

Onojuvwevwo’s strong start to the season is expected to boost her confidence as she aims to improve on her personal bests and make an impact on the global stage.

With her sights set on representing Nigeria in major championships, her early-season form suggests she will be a contender in both the 200m and 400m events this year.
