Eguavoen: Super Eagles Must Always Give Their Best In Every Match

Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has served as a strong hint that the best has not been seen of his team, as he says they must always give their best in every match.

He stated as much in the wake of the Eagles’ shock 1-0 victory over Egypt in their opening match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Eagles’ former defender, captain, and head coach, who is also now technical director of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), admitted it will not be a stroll to the trophy on February 6.

He, however, enthused that the spirit his players displayed on Tuesday against The Pharaohs is evocative of their desire to go all the way to the trophy.

He praised them for playing to his instructions and adhering to the tactical plan, especially with regards to snuffing out Egypt’s biggest star, Mohammed Salah.

However, the tactician, who was fondly called ‘Cerezo’ during his playing days, acknowledged that he and his wards cannot afford to rest on their oars just yet.

With the Super Eagles’ next game now looming large this Saturday against Sudan, who were 1972 champions in the same country, Cameroon, ‘Egu’ admitted that he still has a lot to do in knocking the lads into championship-winning mode.

He, however, concluded with a verdict that they only have to keep playing to his instructions, stay focused on the task at hand, and always give their best whenever they are called upon to play for the country.

Despite the euphoria of Tuesday’s victory, Eguavoen opted to stay modest ahead of Saturday’s game against Sudan, saying there are no minnows in modern-day football.

The soft-spoken gaffer conceded that he cannot predict victory for his side against the Sudanese, but promised that they will give the very best effort they can muster in order to carry the day.

Eguavoen posited: “We know the strength of our players; we have a path towards the same direction.

“We have the privilege to serve the country and we must always give our best.

“I do not know who is going to win, but we’ll try in our own ways to approach every game with all seriousness.”
