Eguavoen: I Still Believe In My Players, They All Have Great Character

Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen is keeping his trust fully in his current array of players in the Nigerian national team, despite their shock 2-1 loss at home against Rwanda on Monday.

Sports247.ng reports that, despite scoring first in the dead rubber 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Eagles capitulated when least expected.

While a cross-section of Nigerians believe the loss was because the Eagles had already qualified for AFCON 2025 and would still be group leaders regardless of Monday’s result, others blamed it on the absence of key players in the starting line-up.

However, rather than slam his players for failing to hold their own at The Nest of Champions, Eguavoen put it all down to ill luck, but admitted the result made him sad.

Egu stated with a shaky voice, “I feel very sad right now. It was not what we plsnned for.

“We scored first and, against the run of play, we conceded. All we tried after just did not work.

“This is football. It happens on some days like that. Today’s one of those bad days.”

‘Cerezo’ then gave a breakdown of the counter-tactics he employed when he realised that his team was staring defeat in the eye, but lamented how everything he tried failed to work.

“They scored a second goal, and we tried to come back with two strikers on the field, but it just didn’t work,” Egu pondered.

The former Eagles’ defender, captain and head coach, however, refused to throw in the towel, as he stressed that Nigeria’s array of top quality players are still among the very best anywhere in the world.

“We’ll keep trying. We have a good squad. We have a strong squad.

“It just didn’t happen for us in this match for whatever reasons.

“I still believe is this team. We have players with character who are ready to make Nigeria proud,” the one fondly Cerezo’ affirmed.
