A third division club in Greece, Zakynthos have appointed former Super Eagles defender and head coach, Augustine Eguavoen as their technical director and manager in a season’s deal.
Though the deal was initiated last season, sports247.ng gathered that ‘Egu’ finally reached a decision with the team this weekend, after extensive discussions with the club’s president.
Eguavoen said his main target with his new club now is to ensure they gain promotion to the second-tier league from the third-ranking Gamma Ethniki.
Though Zakynthos have never played in the Greek Super League since their establishment in 1961, the team has a rich history of mid-class honours.
However, the squad suffered a slump that saw them drop to the fourth-tier Delta Ethniki after a financial turmoil, but moved a step up last season, and ‘Cerezo’ believes he can take them higher now that he is change.
Eguavoen declared: “I have seen them play. I watched an FA Cup match last week and the club won big. There are a few individually brilliant players and overall the team is good.
“We don’t want to be in the same league for more than a season and I like the flexibility of my role in the long term as technical director and head coach.”
