Edo Women’s Rugby Team Seizes Victory As Champions In Inaugural NRFF Sevens Women’s National Championship

Edo women’s rugby team showcased their prowess and emerged as the triumphant champions in the inaugural Nigerian Rugby Football Federation’s (NRFF) Sevens Women’s National Championship held in Asaba, Delta State over the weekend.

The tournament witnessed an exhilarating display of talent and skill from the participants.

Throughout the competition, Team Edo demonstrated their dominance, going unbeaten and sweeping aside their opponents to claim the coveted title.

The road to victory was paved with impressive victories, as they secured wins against Imo Pyramids, Abia, and Delta B team during the group stage.

In the second round, they triumphed over Benue Buffalos and sealed their place in the final by overwhelming Delta Team A in the semifinals.

The final showdown witnessed a determined Edo side taking on the formidable Lagos-based team, ECO II.

Despite challenging weather conditions with heavy downpours, the Edo women remained undeterred and emerged triumphant with a convincing 17-0 victory.

Their exceptional performance earned them well-deserved accolades as the favorites lived up to expectations.

Becky Okpitiko, a standout player from Team Edo, was named the player of the tournament, securing the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title and the top try scorer award.

Her outstanding contributions were rewarded with a cash prize of N100,000.

In other compelling encounters, Delta A defeated their B team with a scoreline of 15 to 5, claiming the bronze medal and further highlighting the state’s strong rugby talent.

Coach Williams Ntiense, who guided Edo to their championship victory, expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the unwavering support from the state’s Sports Commission.

He emphasized that increased backing and sponsorship from the private sector would be pivotal in advancing rugby development in Nigeria and propelling the country’s teams toward success on the international stage.
