President Okowa praised the state of Edo for its remarkable infrastructure and solid support, urging other states to follow their example. The decision to choose Benin City as the host city for this prestigious national event was based on the city’s exceptional facilities. Edo State demonstrated unwavering support for the AFN by providing funding, accommodations, and meals, ensuring the smooth execution of the trials. President Okowa extended his appreciation to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Deputy Governor Rt Hon Philip Shaibu, and Chairman of Edo Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, for their invaluable assistance.
The AFN President also expressed his gratitude towards Premium Trust Bank, the lead sponsor, for their unwavering belief in the federation. Premium Trust Bank has been a significant contributor to the success of AFN events, starting with their sponsorship of the 2022 National Sports Festival in Asaba. The athletes themselves echoed this sentiment, lauding Premium Trust Bank for their synergy and partnership with the AFN. The bank’s commitment to supporting major sporting events in Nigeria extends beyond their association with the AFN, as they are also the sponsors of the upcoming Abuja marathon scheduled for October this year.
It is worth noting that Premium Trust Bank wasted no time in recognizing the achievements of Nigerian athletes following the conclusion of the last World Athletics Championship in Oregon, United States. They signed Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume as brand ambassadors, highlighting their exceptional performances at the championship. This partnership further strengthens the bond between Premium Trust Bank and the AFN, solidifying their shared commitment to the development and promotion of athletics in Nigeria.
The 2023 World Athletics Championship National Trials served as a platform to identify the most talented Nigerian athletes who will represent the country in the forthcoming Budapest 2023 World Championships. With the support of the Edo State government, Premium Trust Bank, and other sponsors, the AFN aims to maximize Nigeria’s representation on the international stage. The success of these trials signifies a significant step forward in Nigeria’s athletic pursuits, bolstering the confidence of athletes and officials alike as they prepare for future competitions.
