Edo state’s under-18 male football team clinched the bronze medal in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria as the zonal Football Associations’ Youth Football Tournament concluded in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, with Rivers emerging as champions.
Despite facing challenges, including the loss of the Edo FA vice chairman, Kindness Ohiowele, who led the delegation, the Benin boys displayed resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

In a thrilling third-place match against Bayelsa, Team Edo emerged victorious after a tense encounter.
They took the lead early in the game through Omoruyi Endurance in the 13th minute, only for Bayelsa to equalize before halftime and take the lead in the 38th minute.
However, Edo staged a remarkable comeback, with God’stime Alakwe scoring a beautiful goal in the 76th minute to level the score.
The match ultimately went to penalty shootouts, where Team Edo prevailed with a 5-4 victory, converting all their kicks to secure the bronze medal.
Under the guidance of coach Osayomore Aghahowa, Edo’s U-18 football team showcased their potential throughout the tournament, culminating in a well-deserved third-place finish.
Their journey included a crucial 1-0 victory over Cross River in the group stage, courtesy of Alakwe’s late goal.
Despite the challenges and setbacks, Edo’s young footballers demonstrated skill, determination, and teamwork, earning praise for their impressive performance in the South-South U-18 Football Tourney.
