Edo Queens FC of Benin will on Sunday embark on a trip to the City of Calabar the Capital of Cross Rivers state by air, as they lock horns with Pelican Stars of Calabar for matchday 5 of the ongoing 2021/2022 NWFL Premiership.
The match is scheduled to take place at the UJ Usuene Stadium, Calabar, on Wednesday 19th January 2021, at 4 pm Nigeria time.
It could be recalled that the management of the team as led by Mrs Sabina Amiemenoghena Chikere, did mention at the beginning of the new NWFL season that the team would be travelling to away matches by air. So it is commendable to posit that the management has kept to their words. This is also one of the ways and means of motivating the girls to have a successful season.
Edo Queens in their first away trip travelled by the same means to Gombe, where they defeated their hosts, Adamawa Queens by two unreplied goals. The team will depart the shores of Benin City on Sunday morning en route to Lagos, where they will connect their flight to Calabar.
The “Obaseki Girls” as watched by the Deputy Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, defeated serial opponents, Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 last Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and currently sits top of Group A with 8 points.
A win for Edo Queens in Calabar, would increase their lead at the top and put them in the right position to book one of the three tickets from Group A, though with seven matches still to play before the Super 6 which comes up after the completion of the abridged league. But it is pertinent to know that the coach Wemimo Mathew led Benin based Queens are very optimistic about making it to the Super 6 and also booking a place in the African Women Champions League.
The players are in good shape and have the right frame of mind ahead of the cracker. The management has full confidence in the girls that they would do well to come back home with maximum points from Calabar.
Pelican Stars are the only team in Group A, that’s yet to record a point with 9 goals conceded in four matches.
