Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medal hero and former Nigerian national team shot stopper Dosu Joseph has stated that the Senior national team, as it stands looks like a good team on paper that is ready to compete with the best footballing nations in Africa at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles qualified for the 2019 AFCON after playing a 1 – 1 draw against South Africa at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg in November qualifying for the nations Cup for the first time since winning the competition in 2013 having failed to book qualification in the last two occasions in 2015 and 2017.
Speaking with Sports247.ng the Dream Team I hero said. “The team looks very good I must tell you. The way they played throughout the qualifiers was amazing apart from the first scare we got in Uyo when they lost to South Africa they have become somewhat untouchable. Going to the AFCON, they look like a very formidable team that can shock Africa once again and bring home the trophy like they did in 2013.
The former Reggiana of Italy shot stopper has also backed Coach Gernot Rohr’s hunt for the possible invitation of more players to the senior national team. “As a coach you know what is best for your team and I am in total support of him going for the best players to add to the squad but he has to do that early so that the newly invited players can gel early and well before the competition proper. Nigeria has some of the best players around the world so he should have his pick.”
With Super Eagles defensive midfielder Ogenyi Onazi a doubt for the tournament, Dosu hopes there wouldn’t be injury problems in the team which could cause the Super Eagles not to have it best legs and also a good reason to give opportunities to as many players which would eventually come in handy should the team get weakened through injury at any point.
