Former Nigerian international, Duke Udi, has expressed disappointment at Rivers United’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.
Rivers United suffered a 2-0 loss to USM Alger, leading to a 2-1 aggregate defeat and elimination from the continental competition.
Reflecting on the outcome, Udi emphasized the importance of such matches as learning experiences for Nigerian teams, urging them to aspire beyond domestic success in the Nigerian Premier League.
He underscored the evolving landscape of African football, noting the narrowing gap between teams and the increasing competitiveness across the continent.
“I gave Rivers United a 50-50 chance to come out because Rivers United has experience in continental competitions,” Udi remarked, highlighting the team’s pedigree in African football.
However, he expressed disappointment at the result, particularly after following the match closely until the 1-0 scoreline.
“African football has closed the gap,” Udi observed, citing recent examples from the Champions League to illustrate the continent’s evolving football dynamics.
He referenced the unexpected performances of Tanzanian and Ivorian teams, emphasizing the challenges faced by North African sides in recent competitions.
Despite Rivers United’s experience and past encounters with North African opponents, Udi lamented their inability to secure a favorable result.
He stressed the need for Nigerian teams to adapt to the evolving African football landscape and raise their standards to compete effectively on the continental stage.
As Rivers United contemplates their early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, Udi’s insights serve as a reminder of the growing competitiveness in African football and the need for Nigerian clubs to evolve and excel in continental competitions.
