INTERVIEW: Dr Rafiu Ladipo Speaks On Challenges Facing Nigeria Supporter Clubs, Calls For National Fasting & Prayers for Super Eagles

Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President Général, Nigéria Football Supporters Club sheds light on the challenges faced by the club during the ongoing AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

What are the challenges the Supporters Club is currently facing at AFCON?

Well, we have played three matches and advanced to the round of 16. Our upcoming match against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon is crucial. It’s a must-win for us to progress to the quarterfinals and dream of lifting the trophy. I’ve instructed our members to fast till noon, praying for victory. The sacrifice our supporters make is immense – traveling long distances, spending nights on the road, all out of love for our country.

You mentioned the lack of support from the government and the football federation. Can you elaborate on that?

It’s disheartening that the government, at both state and federal levels, doesn’t recognize the sacrifices of our supporters. We, as members of the Supporters Club, fund our trips and activities through our own efforts. We don’t receive financial support. For this AFCON, only 90 tickets were allocated to us, while other countries fly down their supporters, covering accommodation, meals, and allowances. Unfortunately, this isn’t happening in Nigeria, and it’s indeed very sad.

Historically, the supporters club had corporate and government support. Why has that changed?

Let me clarify, the Nigerian Football Federation and the government don’t offer consistent support. In the past, some companies sponsored us due to personal relationships and their love for the Supporters Club. However, for the past three years, we’ve lacked sponsors due to disagreements between the NFF and previous sponsors. Thankfully, this time, SEFAX and Nigerian Brewery have provided some support, but it falls short of what we need.

Can you explain the financial challenges you’re facing during this AFCON?

The financial challenges are significant. Airfare from Nigeria to Cote d’Ivoire alone costs about 1.3 million, and with over hundred supporters expected, the expenses are overwhelming. Traveling by road costs an additional 200,000 per person. Accommodation and other essential expenses add to the burden. SEFAX and Nigerian Brewery’s support has been appreciated, but it doesn’t cover all our needs.

Despite the challenges, how are you ensuring the Super Eagles receive unwavering support?

The spirit of Nigeria comes first for us. Our supporters will not lack anything come tomorrow’s match against Cameroon. I believe God’s favor will be on our side, and we will emerge victorious. I implore Nigerians to be with us in spirit, supporting and praying for the team. The match is not just about the players on the field; it’s about the entire nation coming together.

What should Nigerians expect from tomorrow’s match, and how can they contribute to the support?

Tonight’s match is crucial, and with God’s favor, we will win. I call on all Nigerians to stand with us, even if they cannot fast. Be with us in spirit, pray for the team, and join us in supporting, cheering, singing, and dancing for the Super Eagles. We need the collective support of the nation to overcome the challenges we face and triumph on the field.

In the face of adversity, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo’s determination and the unwavering support of the Supporters Club reflect the resilience and passion that define Nigerian football. As they face Cameroon in a must-win clash, the nation awaits with bated breath, hoping for victory and a step closer to AFCON glory.
