Applause is rolling out for the second edition of Dolphins Swimming League, which got underway at the weekend at Grange School, Lagos.
Leading the shower of praise, initiator of the league, Oluseyi Oyebode said it is meant to spot future world beaters for Nigeria in swimming.
A total of nine schools and a contingent from Lagos State are competing in the league, which Grange School headmaster, Guy Cassarchis said will provide the participants opportunities to showcase their talents.
Cassarchis added: “The organisers are definitely in the right direction in setting up a swimming programme.
“I think having a regular competition is very important for children even when you look at it from the angle of physical education.
“The more children we can get into the swimming pool, not necessary for competition but to teach them how to swim, it will mean there will be less drowning in public places.
“Also, when they travel abroad, they will be confident in public pools, light rivers and the ocean.”
On his part, Lagos State Swimming Association chairman, Segun Adekoya said the initiative is commendable.
Adekoya retorted: “It’s a wonderful thing for the organisers to even think about such a competition.
“For them to have survived the first season and be in the second season, I think it is amazing.
“All stakeholders in the sport must support them and ensure that they succeed. It helps us to benchmark where we are in swimming in Lagos State.
“Swimming is a major sport for a lot of the schools that are competing in the event, so it helps us know where we are and what needs to be done to bring the children to the level that we want them or they should be.”
