Super Falcons’ coach, Thomas Dennerby has declared that he wants to produce the best ever Nigerian female squad, and go ahead to record the nation’s most glorious outing so far at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sports247.ng reports that the best the Falcons achieved from the competition since inception at China ’91 is a quarter-final finish at USA ’99 and, after seeing Nigeria attend every single edition of the Female Mundial, Dennerby is now looking at achieving a semi-final spot.
Dennerby said the Falcons’ target at the eighth edition coming up in France this summer is to surpass the performance of every Nigerian women’s team that has been at the competition over the past years.
The Swedish tactician said he is happy to have surpassed the target he set for the team at the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations in Ghana, after which they got more exposure at the invitational competitions in China and Cyprus, which give him added hope that they can excel.
He also pointed out that Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has played a key role in their preparations for France 2019, having organised various pre-World Cup camps for the nine-time African champions, all of which he believes will reflect on their performances in June.
Dennerby added: “When you set a target, you have to be honest and set a target that everyone can meet.
“So far, the only target we have set is that we want to be the very best Nigerian team that has even been to the World Cup. That is our target.
“I am really happy that the NFF helped us with the camps and the tournaments.
“We have had China camp, we had Cyprus camp, we go to Spain next week and we also have the final camp in Austria.
“One experience from our game against Belgium in Cyprus is that we will not play a lower defence line.”
