The Delta State Local Governments Sports Festival, the first of such initiatives in Nigeria, organised by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, is conceived to support sports development and to sustain the position of Delta State as the leader in Nigerian sports.
It is designed to provide opportunities for sportspeople across communities to showcase themselves, discover talents for the state and the country, and encourage active participation of the citizenry in sports for healthy living, fun, friendship, networking, and unity across communities and local governments.
The competition shall be in two categories for boys and girls: Intermediate (for ages 14 to 17) and Senior (for age 18 and above).
The maiden edition shall feature only non-contact athletics events in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
The track events include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 110 hurdles, 100 hurdles, 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed relays.
The field events include long jump, high jump, triple jump, discus, shot put, and javelin.
The programme is scheduled to hold from January 14 through 19 with the opening and closing ceremonies at the Steve Keshi Stadium, Asaba, while the qualifiers shall hold at the Delta State Polytechnic Stadium, Ozoro.
The local government councils are currently in the process of selecting their athletes with their sports officers and coaches very much on ground to make it a sporting holiday.
