Delta State government has allayed fears over the collapsed scoreboard at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, as officials downplayed the incident and say there is no cause for alarm, because it will be fixed immediately.
Sports247.ng reports that soccer lovers were worried over the chances of the arena still going ahead to host two matches of the Super Eagles next month, following the collapsed scoreboard on Monday.
The arena, which hosted both the 2018 Federation Cup final and Eagles’ friendly with Uganda last year, has again been earmarked to receive the Nigerian national team against Seychelles on March 23 and versus Egypt three days later.
However, Asaba soccer lovers are now apprehensive of their chances of seeing the Eagles live once again, after the arena’s scoreboard collapsed around 7:30pm on Monday due to heavy rain and windstorm.
Although no one was injured in the incident, the collapsed scoreboard destroyed a section of the stadium, which could pose security concerns for the Eagles’ upcoming matches.
In reaction, Delta State commissioner for information, Patrick Ukah said there is no cause for alarm and doused all worries, as he says immediate renovation will commence by the contractors in charge of the edifice.
Ukah also noted that the heavy winds predicted across the country by NiMet caused the scoreboard to collapse, then thanked God that no life was lost in the incident.
The commissioner concluded by stressing: “The damaged part of the complex would be fixed by the contractor, as the project had not been handed over to the state government.”
