Rangers International FC suffered a 2-1 defeat against El-Kanemi Warriors FC in their NPFL matchday 21 encounter at the El-Kanemi Stadium, Maiduguri, on Wednesday.
Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu attributed the loss to defensive lapses, admitting that his team’s momentary lack of concentration led to both goals conceded.

Despite praising his players’ overall effort, he emphasized the need for sharper focus in future matches.
Ilechukwu, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Nigerian national team, reassured fans that this setback is only temporary. He urged his squad to stay confident and maintain a positive mindset as they prepare for their next match against Ikorodu City.
El-Kanemi took the lead through Nasiru Salihu’s strike in the 18th minute, but Rangers responded in the 63rd minute with an equalizer from Isaac Saviour. However, Salihu struck again in the 73rd minute to restore El-Kanemi’s advantage.
Rangers pushed for another equalizer, bringing on former World Cup star Michael Uchebo in the closing stages. Despite their efforts, El-Kanemi’s goalkeeper, Abine George, made crucial saves in extra time to secure the win.
With this result, El-Kanemi Warriors climbed to 4th place in the standings, while Rangers slipped to 6th. Both Rangers and Ikorodu City, currently in 5th place, share the same points. The two teams will face off in a crucial clash on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 4:00 pm at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
