Although he is not one of three Nigerian boxers who have qualified for this year’s Games in Paris, France, Abimbola said he is looking eagerly towards the next one in 2028.
He pointed out that age is on his side, hence his relaxed approach towards his career, but the amiable lad further disclosed that his biggest motivation is from his dad, who is a former boxer and now his coach.
Abimbola stated, “I fight in the lightweight category, and I am happy that I won my bout in this competition.
“My training, my determination, and my work out gave me enough confidence that I was going to knock him out.
“I had that on my mind, but I was still careful; because nobody can predict the outcome of a fight like this one.
“However, once you have a strong mindset that you want to do it, you are definitely going to do it.”
The vibrant pugilist went on to hail his dad as his biggest motivator, while two of his brothers are also boxers.
He disclosed, “My dad is my role model. He’s a former Nigeria and West Africa welterweight champion. My dad is my coach, and he encourages me a lot.
“So, I see no reason why I won’t be motivated. I also have two senior brothers, and both of them are world champions and African champions. So, I believe in myself that I am also going to still make them proud.
“I am thinking of becoming a professional, but I’m also having my eyes on the next Olympic Games. I am working towards my professional career, but I also want to focus on the Olympics.”
Abimbola concluded by revealing his profile and mentioned the strides he has achieved since he started boxing at a very tender age.
“I still have age beside me, and I’m sure that I’m going to take part in the next Olympics. I have the experience that is required to win a gold medal.
“I’ve represented Lagos State, Osun State, and Kano State, where I started in 2010, when I was still in primary school. I’ve been fighting since when I cannot even remember. I’ve been doing this since when I was a child,” Abimbola submitted.
