Former Super Eagles goal keeper, Ike Shoromu has disclosed that current footballers want to earn money instead of playing with passion and fame.
Ike Shorunmu was the starting goal keeper for the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup played at Korea and Japan.
While answering questions from journalist on the Family United by Football WhatsApp platform, Shorunmu said his generation played for passion and fame.
“It was very interesting; the most important thing was that we had encouragement from brothers to keep doing what made us happy.”
” Compare to now, where they(players)think of money. Years back, it was more of to be known on the street. The current players choose money over fame and passion.” He concluded.
Commenting on what inspired him to be a goal keeper, the former Besiktas of Turkey goalie said “it was very simple.”
“I saw our legends, Peter Rufai, Emmanuel Okala, Best Ogedegbe; I saw how they are keeping and I thought this was interesting. I started pushing to be like them and with prayers, I am what I am today.” He added.
Ike Shorunmu had a 10 year spell with the national team from 1992 to 2002 appearing 36 times.
