A number of schools in Nigeria will soon come alive with a rare sporting impact, as an event that is largely restricted to the Winter Olympics, curling, is set to take place across the country.
Sports247.ng reports that this is sequel to renewed efforts from Nigeria Curling Federation to make the sport popular through youth impact and participation by students.
To that end, the federation has commenced registration for the first edition of the Nigerian Secondary Schools Curling Championship, which is scheduled to hold from April 25 to 27, 2019 .
While affirming that it will be the first national curling championship to be held in Nigeria, the federation disclosed that entries should be made online at its website – www.nigeria-curling.com.
With entries not expected to be submitted later than first week in April 2019, interested secondary schools must log on early, to register their players with their passwords, as late entries will not be accepted.
The federation also plans to stage a clinic for 20 schools to proceed the championship from March 24th to 26th.
Officials said this is among other objectives to formally introduce curling to Nigerians, using students as the first port of call.
President of the federation, Mr Daniel Damola says the championship is part of efforts to develop curling in Nigeria from the grassroots.
Damola added that it includes plans of equipping the participating class of pioneer students with the rules and regulations of the sport.
He added that he is optimistic the country will in no distant future be a strong force to reckon with in curling.
Damola enthused: “The federation is stopping at nothing to provide all the necessary equipment that will be used by athlete’s to enable them excel in the sport.
“The federation will also in the first week in February 2019 take delivery of curling equipment for use in schools across the country.”
