The residents of IDPs Camp Uhogua joined other Nigerians and people all over the world on April 6, 2021, to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
The event which was held at the various playgrounds at the Camp was facilitated by Community Sport and Educational Development Initiative ( CSED). This is the second time CSED Initiative is using sports to inspire and engage the youths in the camps.
The excited residents participated in three sports events namely Netball training/matches, Badminton training/matches, and 5-A-side football training and penalty kicks competition. Winners in the three-sport categories received cash prizes from CSED National Coordinator, Edema.
However, it was not all training and playing, as the camp residents also had food donated to them by CSED Initiative. These items included ten 50kg bags of rice, cartons of packed fish, a basket of tomatoes, groundnut oil, and other cooking condiments that was meant for the dinner of the about 5000 (five thousand) residents of the Camp.
The Assistant Resident Senior Pastor of the Camp, Pastor Evelyn Ekhator, and other leaders of the Camp, thanked the Trustees of CSED for their continuous support of the educational and sporting activities of the residents of the Camp.
Pastor Ekhator while expressing her happiness and joy on the IDSDP event brought to the residents of the camp, stated that she cannot be measured in words. She further remarked that taking part in sports activities have helped the physical and wellbeing of residents of the camp, particularly, during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
Following the success of the IDSDP event, CSED Trustees are currently liaising with the NYSC Zonal office in Edo State to facilitate the posting of four (Doctor, Social worker, Psychologist, and Physical Education), graduates to IDPs Uhogua.
The CSED Initiative further revealed its willingness to pay the one-year stipend of the four Youth Corpers who will be posted to the IDPs Camp, as part of their PSHE drive in schools. The CSED also hope to work closely with their supporters and partners to hold an inter-house sports event for the residents of the IDPs Camp Uhogua before the end of the year.
