The management of Confluence Queens FC of Lokoja has dedicated the team’s qualification for the Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) Super-6 contest to their state governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo.
The note of gratitude was served by no less a person than the club’s chairman, Honourable Abdulmalik Isah Doli, who spoke in glowing terms about Governor Ododo after their last match in the regular season.
Although the game ended in a goalless draw at home, against the league’s top placed side, Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia, Doli was relieved that both teams eventually qualified.
The other four qualifiers are Heartland Queens of Owerri, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, Edo Queens of Benin City and Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa, but Honourable Doli singled his side out for praise.
Indeed, in the course of the campaign, Confluence Queens lost only two matches and drew the same number of games, while winning the remaining eight, to place second on the log.
They won their last three matches before Wednesday’s home draw with the table-toppers, which left the club’s boss in sheer delight, but, in his state of glee, he still remembered to thank everyone that made it possible.
“I feel grateful, because it’s not an easy going challenge,” Doli confessed.
“We tried to even top the league, but we finished second after our match on Wednesday … but both teams still qualified for the Super-6.
“We thank God and we thank our government that is always there for us, especially the present governor. He’s a sportsman, he loves sports and he gives us all that we need. I have to thank him for that.
“The league is very special and a dynamic one. What I know in football is that you can not underrate any team.
“In our first match, we drew with Dannaz Queens of Lagos, who were just baptised at that time; but I was surprised at the way they played that day. We lost a penalty during that game, and that was how it became a draw.
“We are now preparing very well for the Super-6. I believe my team will make it to the final and we are going to take the cup, by God’s grace.”
