The Federal Government through the Ministry Of Minister of Youth and Sports Development has directed the testing of all athletes by relevant authorities before the Nigeria representatives head out to Birmingham, United Kingdom for this year’s Commonwealth Games billed to start July 2022.
The directive was given by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare during a meeting held with the stakeholders of the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The minister said Nigeria is not willing to take chances again with any athlete that can jeopardize the reputation of the country.
“We will prefer to come back from the games without medals rather than being embarrassed a second time, there must be no exceptions,” he insisted.
With 60 days left before the games start, Mr. Dare made known that the countdown to the games has started adding that the ministry is already working with the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) to ensure that contingents’ accommodation, camping, testing, ticketing, and kits are adequately taken care of.
100 athletes will be adorning the country’s colors in nine different events including Judo, Athletics, Boxing, Weightlifting, Table tennis, Wrestling, Para-table tennis, Para-athletics, and Para-powerlifting when the 2022 Common Wealth games start in Birmingham.
Birmingham Games Village will officially be declared open on July 22, 2022, while the opening ceremony for the Games will be held on July 28, 2022.
