This Saturday, November 24 will offer a moment in history for Enugu, as the maiden Coal City Half Marathon will hog major streets and roads of the Enugu State capital.
Ahead of the race this weekend, sports247.ng learnt that the organising committee has finalised arrangements with relevant security agencies, medical institutions and other affiliates to ensure a hitch-free marathon.
Addressing the media on preparations, Enugu state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Joseph Udedi said over 1,500 athletes have registered for the race through The Coal City metropolis.
Also registered are 15 athletes from outside the country, who will be airlifted by Ethiopian Airlines, co-sponsors of the event, powered by Zenith Bank, and supported by a host of other products.
Athletes have been mandated to get screening at Parklane Teaching Hospital, Enugu to get medical certificates, while those from outside should do their medicals at government recognised hospitals.
The half marathon, which was approved by Enugu State Executive Council on July 17, is aimed at making the city a tourism destination.
The race, which will begin by 6am at Okpara Square, will have runners go through Bisala Road through New Haven down to Nkponkiti.
In line with IAAF standard, the marathon will have about 10 refreshment points along the 21-km route for the refreshment of the athletes, from which the male and female winners will receive a cash prize of $3,500.
