Coach Tunde Sanni Decries Kwara United’s Setback In 4-2 Loss To Sunshine Stars

Kwara United head coach, Tunde Sanni, has expressed deep disappointment following his team’s 4-2 defeat to Sunshine Stars in their NPFL Matchday 27 encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Sanni described the result as a major setback in their campaign, lamenting costly mistakes and missed opportunities.

The match started on a promising note for the Harmony Boys, despite conceding an early goal in the 11th minute through Liman Ahmad.

Kwara United responded strongly, with Issa Gatta leveling in the 23rd minute before Wasiu Alalade put them ahead in the 27th minute. However, a defensive lapse led to an unfortunate own goal by Saheed Olaniyi, allowing Sunshine Stars to equalize and shift the momentum.

The coach admitted that conceding just before halftime—when Liman Ahmad struck again to give the hosts a 3-2 lead—was a major psychological blow to his players. Things worsened just two minutes into the second half when Ahmad completed his hat-trick, extending Sunshine Stars’ advantage to 4-2.

Despite making tactical substitutions—introducing Nurudeen Badmus, Sadeeq Yusuf, and Omotayo Yusuf in an effort to rescue the game—Sanni’s team struggled to regain control.

Speaking after the match, the coach acknowledged the team’s effort but rued their defensive lapses.

“This is a disappointing result for us,” Sanni said. “We had the game in our hands at some point, but we made costly errors that changed the course of the match. We need to learn from this and improve quickly because every point matters at this stage of the season.”

Kwara United will now focus on bouncing back in their next fixture, as Tunde Sanni and his team look to address their weaknesses and reignite their NPFL campaign.
