Fidelis Ilechukwu, the coach of Enugu Rangers, has advocated for the inclusion of players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) in the national team, asserting that many domestic players possess the talent and skill to compete at the international level.
In a passionate plea, Ilechukwu emphasized that several players plying their trade in the NPFL are more than capable of outperforming some of the current members of the national team roster.
He underscored the importance of providing opportunities for NPFL players to showcase their abilities on the national stage.
“I know so many people. We talk and accuse and talk many little things about this statement. There are so many. Not one, not two, not three, not four.
There are so many of our players playing in NPFL that are better than those ones playing with the Super Eagles. They must give them a chance; it is very important,” stated Ilechukwu.
Furthermore, Ilechukwu challenged the prevailing notion that European-based players inherently possess superior skills compared to their counterparts in the NPFL.
He contended that talent exists abundantly within the Nigerian league and urged for a fair assessment of players regardless of their playing location.
“People somewhat believe that once you cross over to Europe you are better than those in Nigeria. It is not true. I disagree. There are so many white coaches that we are better than, quote me any day anytime.
I don’t want to mention names but I said there are so many white coaches. We are better than,” affirmed Ilechukwu.
Ilechukwu’s remarks highlight a growing sentiment within the Nigerian football community regarding the need for greater recognition and opportunities for homegrown talent.
As discussions surrounding player selection and coaching personnel continue, his words serve as a reminder of the untapped potential within the NPFL.
