Coach Esu Oqua Okon began his football career as a professional player, amassing 16 years of experience that spanned various Nigerian teams. His journey included stints at Govi Babes, Rovers FC, Udoji United FC, Doyin Babes, and more.
Recognizing the importance of education as a safety net for athletes, he enrolled in the university while still pursuing his football dreams. This dual focus on sports and academics proved pivotal in shaping his future.
After graduating from the university, Coach Esu embarked on a grassroots coaching career in Cross River State, where he harnessed his passion for football to nurture young talents.
He played a crucial role in developing football skills among aspiring players, emphasizing the importance of education as a foundation for life beyond sports.
He has dedicated himself to imparting his knowledge to younger generations, ensuring they are prepared for a multifaceted future.
In his pursuit of becoming a certified football coach, Coach Esu shared his ambition, stating, “Passion drives us to do whatever we do. I have a passion for football. To be self-actualized, you need to set a goal. To be a great coach in this country—that is my self-actualization.” His unwavering passion for the beautiful game and commitment to education serve as the driving force behind his aspirations.
Currently, Coach Esu Oqua Okon holds the position of head coach at the CBN Calabar branch and Eastside Sports Club. He also mentors a grassroots team comprising young talents aged 6 to 14 years, with the goal of preparing them for the international stage, particularly in female football.

Addressing challenges faced in grassroots sports, Coach Esu highlighted the need for sponsors and emphasized the importance of convincing parents to allow their children to participate in football at a young age. He recognized the transformational potential of the sport, especially in female football, citing the achievements of Nigerian stars like Asisat Oshoala and Ajibade.
Regarding government support for grassroots sports, Coach Esu called for the revival of competitions such as the Principal Cup, MAMSA Cup, and Governor’s Cup. He stressed the importance of financial assistance and organized grassroots competitions to rekindle Nigeria’s dominance in grassroots soccer.
While Coach Esu Oqua Okon doesn’t have a specific role model, he relies on self-motivation and believes strongly in his abilities to inspire and effect change in the footballing world.

When asked about alternative sports apart from football, Coach Esu’s unwavering passion for football was evident. “For me, I believe we have only two sports which are football and any other game. Any other game is second.” He recalled his experiences in handball but asserted that football holds a unique place in his heart.
