Officials and coaches of male basketball clubs in the country have rejected plans by the governing body to organise an abridged premier league to end the year’s calendar.
Though Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) cited time and cash constraints for their plan, sports247.ng learnt that the proposal does not go down well with the clubs.
Consequently, clubs of the Nigeria Premier Basketball League have come out with a statement that they will not participate in the abridged event scheduled for November 12 to 17.
They also turned their back on any tournament that is organized as a duplication of the recent Kwese Premier Basketball League (KPBL).
This position was reached during a meeting of the 15 teams, with 13 of them voting for a boycott of the proposed abridged league.
While none voted against the boycott, two abstained from voting on the matter, pending further consultation with their club top administrators.
A communique signed by chairman Basketball Premier League Team Owners Council, Sani Ahmed and secretary, S.K. Bello noted that playing an abridged league would be counter-productive.
They argued that not only would it ridicule the Kwese Premier League they participated in, it will also embarrass the competition’s sponsor.
