Club Brugge have announced the signing of Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika from FC Midtjylland for a fee worth around €9 million, Sports247.ng reports.
Onyedika has penned a five-year contract with the reigning Belgian champions. He will wear the number 15 jersey at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
“Club Brugge and FC Midtjylland reached an agreement today about the definitive transfer of Raphael Onyedika,” a club statement says.
“Onyedika (21) is a defensive midfielder who can also play centrally in the defence. He was trained at the Nigerian FC Ebedei and came to Europe in 2019. He signs a contract until 2027.”
Onyedika joined Midtjylland from affiliate club FC Ebedei in 2019. He impressed with the club’s youth teams and was loaned out to Danish second-tier club FC Fredericia for the 2020-21 season.
He returned to Midtjylland for the 2021-22 season and established himself as a mainstay in the club’s starting eleven.
Onyedika made 48 in all competitions for Midtjylland last season, chipping in with 4 goals and 3 assists from his defensive midfield role. He was recognized as the Danish Superliga Young Player of the Season.
AC Milan was beaten to the signing of the talented youngster by Club Brugge. As previously reported by Sports247, Milan was interested in the player, but the club was unable to meet Midtjylland’s demands.
Onyedika will now continue his development in Belgium and will play in the 2022-23 Champions League.
