Chairman of City Football Club Abuja – Chidi Emmanuel Okonkwo – believes his club is “just about 35 percent of what it’s supposed to be”, despite the club winning it’s first two games of the 2021/2022 Nigeria National League season.
The Citizens recently defeated fellow debutants, FWC Champions FC in the Match week 2, Group A1 Northern Conference – to stay top of the log with six maximum point and a reasonable goal advantage – many thanks to ‘net-buster’ and the league’s top scorer, Emmanuel Ihezuo , who now has four goals in 2 matches.
Responding to the media, the apparently overwhelmed boss said;
“City FC is a project. It’s not just a football club. It’s an institution we’re trying to build. We’re trying as much as possible. Me as a person has been a football administrator in Ghana and Swaziland before I was brought back to Nigeria. I have done so many courses in and outside the country before going into this job.”
The club is just about 35 percent of what it’s suppose to be. Because it’s a baby that we’re trying to nurture. The cohesion is not there yet because the players were just picked; we’re trying to build a team that’s not up to two months now. I give God the glory for the victories. It’s not by our own power, it’s by God’s grace. I think as the league goes on, the team will get better. That is what I can see from the team. The team is not a finished article. Like I said, the team is just about 35 percent of what they can do or what we can achieve.”
Meanwhile, the NNL boss also hinted on replicating the successes he enjoyed while away in Ghana and Swaziland.
“It’s always like that. It’s God. One thing I’ve known is that whatever I lay my hands on is always like that. Even in Ghana, it will take years for them to clean the record I set there. In Swaziland, the same, I was the chairman of one of the biggest clubs there, Black Swallows for many years and I won “whatever.” So I hope I can achieve the same the thing I did in Ghana and Swaziland with this club [City FC].
Chidi, has managed Horebian FC of Ghana, was Chief Executive of Black Swallows of Swaziland, Sporting Director Berekum Chelsea, Ghana.
