Chukwu Wants African Women Champions League

Former Super Eagles head coach, Christian ‘Chairman’ Chukwu has added another angle to commentaries trailing the 11th African Women Cup of Nations, as he believes time has come for a continental competition among clubs as well.

Sports247.ng gathered that Chukwu is of a view that female footballers across the continent have come of age, as seen in the high quality on offer at AWCON 2018, hence his verdict that the time has come for the CAF Women Champions League.

He urged Confederation of African Football to introduce a league for the continent’s women footballers, towards further improving the quality of female in the round leather game, especially at club level.

While congratulating Nigeria’s Super Falcons for winning their ninth African Women Cup of Nations title, Chukwu said the victory was an advantage to the progress of female football in the country.

He, however, advocated for such relevance to come at club level across the continent and urged multi-national companies to be ready to sponsor the CAF Women Champions League in order to make it successful.

Chukwu noted further that such a development would encourage and facilitate establishment of valuable Female Premier Football Leagues in various African countries.

He added: “If CAF introduces a club championship cup competition for women, it will be very nice for women football development in Africa.

“The only challenge would be financing, because I don’t see government sponsoring it since they have found it difficult to sponsor men’s league.”
